How Often Should You Replace Your Ski Helmet?
Your ski helmet is one of the most important pieces of safety gear on the mountain—but like all gear, it doesn't last forever. Knowing when to replace your helmet can make a big difference in how well it protects you.
Most helmet manufacturers recommend replacing your ski helmet every 5 years, even if it hasn’t been involved in a crash. Over time, the materials inside the helmet—especially the foam liner—can degrade due to UV exposure, sweat, temperature changes, and general wear and tear, which can reduce the helmet's ability to absorb impacts.
If you’ve taken a hard fall or hit your head, it’s best to replace your helmet immediately, even if it looks fine. Helmets are designed to absorb the force of an impact once. After that, the internal structure may be compromised, even if the outer shell isn’t visibly damaged.
Cracks or dents in the shell
Loose or compressed interior padding
Worn-out straps or buckles
Faded or brittle plastic from sun exposure
A ski helmet is an investment in your safety. If yours is getting old or has taken a hit, don’t wait—replace it. Better a new helmet than a serious injury.
Stay safe and ski smart! 🎿🧠
